Pablo Ablanedo

Chistreza was one of the finest jazz recordings of 2020

By Ken Micallef - Stereophile Magazine

Ce qui rend ce disque vraiment spécial, c'est la profonde universalité de l'écriture de Pablo Ablanedo qui est mise en évidence par les personnalités du groupe.

The most remarkable aspect of the music of Pablo Ablanedo is the compositions themselves. As an artist Mr Ablanedo has a prodigious gift for sonic architecture. It appears that sound – acoustics of the empirical kind, that is – seems to speak to Mr Ablanedo in a very private and special way.

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pablo Ablanedo is a composer, pianist, and music educator. In 1996, he graduated with a Jazz Composition diploma from Berklee College of Music, where he took part in the last courses taught by the legendary trumpet player Herb Pomeroy. In 1999, he joined forces with a diverse group of jazz players to form the Pablo Ablanedo Octet. In the decade since, the group has recorded three albums on Fresh Sound New Talent RecordsFrom Down There (2001) and Alegría (2003) received 4 and 4½ stars, respectively, in DownBeat Magazine. JazzMan Magazine (France) gave the multi-artist and big band project The Sound of New York Underground (2004) its highest rating CHOC. Pablo's work has also been commissioned by Paquito D'Rivera to be performed by Germany's NDR Big Band. In 2012, on the record label CNM (Creative Nation Music), he released the album ReContraDoble with his Boston based Octet(o). In 2015, Pablo published his first pedagogical piano book, Suite of Mirrors (mDecks Music), a collection of 36 mirror piano pieces for beginning students. In 2019 Newvelle-Records asked Pablo to regroup the NY ensemble to record Chistreza released in April 2020.

A non-exhaustive list of players in Pablo's recordings includes Jenny Scheinman, Ben Monder, the siblings Anat and Avishai Cohen, Chris Cheek, Jerome Sabbagh, Rick DiMuzio, Daniel Ian Smith, Phil Grenadier, Fernando Huergo, Eric Hofbauer, Taylor Haskins, Fernando Brandao, Diego Urcola, Bertram Lehmann, and Franco Pinna, as well as Aaron Goldberg and Miguel Zenon featuring in the NY big band album.
